TUESDAY AFTERNOON BOOK CLUB = 5/2019
The Tuesday Afternoon Book Club met in May to discuss the legal thriller “The Pelican Brief” by John Grisham. The book is Grisham’s third book. It was published in 1992, but it is still a page turner – keeping your interest until the very end.
The story begins with the simultaneous assassinations of two Supreme Court Justices. The country is stunned; the FBI has no clues.
Darby Shaw, a brilliant law student at Tulane University in New Orleans, thinks she has the answer. After spending many hours in the law library researching an obscure connection between the two justices, she puts her thoughts in a wildly speculative brief that builds a strong case against a most unlikely suspect. Her suspect has powerful friends. After Darby narrowly escapes an assassin’s car bomb she realizes someone has read her brief and wants her dead. She contacts an investigative reporter at the Washington Post and convinces him there is a cover-up going on. Darby is in a fight to save her life and expose the people behind the killings. Although written over 20 years ago, it reads as it could have happened today.
Since 1989 Grisham has written 40 novels – most legal thrillers. His suspenseful books keep you reading to learn who was behind the major crime. Stop by the LeRoy Public Library to pick up any of the books by John Grisham or other authors for your summer reading. All the new best-sellers are there as well as many longtime favorites.
