TUESDAY AFTERNOON BOOK CLUB
Summer is a great time to catch up on your reading wherever you are- by the lake, on your deck or in your air-conditioned living room. The LeRoy Public Library offers many great books for both adults and children.
The Tuesday Afternoon Book Club enjoyed reading “The House at Riverton” by Kate Moron during July. The novel opens in 1999 and is set in England. Grace Bradley is 98 years old, living in a nursing home. She is visited by a young director who is making a film about the events of the summer of 1924 at Riverton. Grace went to work at Riverton House as a maid when she was just 14 years old, in 1915, before the First World War. For years her life was connected to the Hartford family, most particularly the two daughters, Hannah and Emmeline. She had long kept the secrets of the family and the house. In the summer of 1924 at a glittering society party held at the house a young poet shot himself. The only witnesses were Hannah and Emmeline – and Grace.
Told in flashback this is the story of Grace’s youth and her time with the Hartford family and the secrets of the Riverton House. The novel is full of secrets – some revealed, others hidden forever. It gives the reader a look into a time long forgotten but still important in history. It is a story of an aristocratic family, a house, a mysterious death and a vanishing way of life, told by a woman who witnessed it all and kept a secret for a lifetime.
