TUESDAY AFTERNOON BOOK CLUB
Many of us have sisters but The Tuesday Afternoon Book Club discussed a book about an unusual relationship between sisters – one we would not have imagined. “The Vanishing Half” by Brit Bennett is a story of twins who chose to live in two very different worlds – one black and one white.
After growing up together in a small southern black community the girls go their separate ways as they reach adulthood. Desiree is raising her black daughter in the southern town she once hoped to escape. Across the country Stella secretly passes for white – even her husband doesn’t know her ethnicity.
Even though they are estranged, the fate of Desiree and Stella remains entwined. The book explores not only racial implications but the family dynamics as well.
Book Club members felt this was an interesting book about women, mothers, family and racial identity. It shows how our past can shape our expectations. Request your copy with the following: https://selco.ent.sirsi.net/client/en_US/ler/search/results?qu=the+vanishing+half&te=&lm=LER_LIMIT
