TUESDAY AFTERNOON BOOK CLUB
The November selection of the Tuesday Afternoon Book Club was “Lost Roses” by Martha Hall Kelly. For those of you who enjoy historical fiction, this is a great book for you.
The time is 1914, just before World War I and the setting is New York, Paris and Russia. Eliza Ferriday is thrilled to be traveling to St. Petersburg with her friend, Sofya Streshnayva, a cousin of the Romanovs. She is looking forward to seeing the splendor of Russia, but when Austria declares war and Russia’s imperial dynasty begins to fall, Eliza escapes back to America. In Russia Sofya and her family flee their country estate and employ Varinka, a local whose acquaintances bring danger to the family. In America, Eliza is doing all she can to help families escape the Revolution. When Sofya’s letters stop coming she fears the worst for her friend.
The book connects the lives and families of Eliza, Sofya and Varinka. “Lost Roses” tells stories of the strength of women and families. Although it is Kelly’s second novel, it is a prequel to her first book “Lilac Girls”, which was set during World War II.
