TUESDAY AFTERNOON “BELLES” BOOK CLUB
TUESDAY AFTERNOON BOOK CLUB
During October the Tuesday Afternoon Book Club members returned to a favorite author, Kristin Hannah, to read “Winter Garden”, a book about the bonds between a mother and her daughters and the link between past and present.
Meredith and Nina Whitson are as different as sisters can be. One stayed home to raise her family and manage the family business – the other followed her dream to become a famous photojournalist. When their father becomes ill the girls find themselves together again alongside their cold, disapproving mother. One his deathbed, their father makes Anya, the girls’ mother, promise to tell them her story. She began it by telling them a (supposed) fairy tale she told them many years ago but never finished. Now it is time to complete the story.
The story, unlike anything they have heard before, is a love story that spans more than sixty years. It moves from war torn Leningrad to modern day Alaska. They learn a secret so shocking it changes them and their relationship with their mother.
The book, part love story, part historical fiction, keeps the reader intrigued. Book Club members all enjoyed the well written book and would recommend it. Kristin Hannah has a talent for writing thought provoking novels. Find this book and others by this author at the LeRoy Public Library.
