“Sold on a Monday” by Kristina McMorris has several themes,1931 and the Depression, no jobs, breadlines, and broken dreams, and sensational news. One picture taken of children not meant for publication accidently turned into the editor and leads to Ellis’s big break. The photo leads to a family being separated, money exchanged, and children being exploited. We discussed what we would do, heartbreaking, but children come first. Today we have social services and hopefully children aren’t exploited. Second theme was how newspapers were run, women were secretaries, not reporters and news were sensationalized. We discussed how the Depression effected us, as children were taught not to waste, eat everything on your plate, hand me downs were common, large gardens and we learned how to do chores. Stop by the LeRoy Library and get a book on gardening or flowers. It is Spring!
