EVENING BOOK CLUB

“Simon the Fiddler” by Paulette Jiles takes place during the final months of the Civil War. Twenty-three old Simon has evaded military duty thanks to his slight stature, youthful looks, and his habit to bend the truth. But after a brawl in Texas, he is conscripted into the Confederate Army. His fiddle playing talent gets him an easy position in a regimental band. Week’s latter, on the eve of the Confederate surrender, Simon and his rag tag band plays for officers and their families and he notices Doris Mary Dillion, an indentured girl from Ireland, the governess to a Union Colonel’s daughter. He can’t forget her but she has 3 years of service left. They go their separate ways but he vows to find her. Read about all the obstacles and different people they encounter before they meet again. Good News! Brenda, our Librarian, has received a grant and her order of young adult and children’s books have arrived. Come check them out. Interested in joining a book club?
