Want to take a long hike?
A Walk in the Woods” by Bill Bryson is a narrative about Bill and friend Katz hiking the Appalachian trail. Starts with buying supplies at a Wilderness Store, “How much?” “You got to be kidding!” ” I really need this?” Purchasing items and not knowing why it’s needed and how to use it sets them up for some hilarious adventures .
Bill has done some hiking but with day pack and Katz has no experience. They meet many people on the trail, some good some not so. Camping is a new experience, only know how to cook noodles and setting up tents is like watching a Three Stooges Show.
Many educational facts are explained, acid rain, urban sprawl, loss of wildlife habitat, and loss of native plants. Explanations given how we can help improve the environment
Bill and Katz hiked a total of 870 miles, 39.5% of the trail, only a fraction of the 2,200 miles that is the Appalachian Trail.
As Katz says, “I hiked the trail, it’s in the details.”
