Afternoon “LeRoy Belles” Book Club
TUESDAY AFTERNOON BOOK CLUB
John Grisham is the author of 30+ novels, short stories and nonfiction books. He has been a popular author for almost 30 years and his books continue to top the best seller list. The March selection of the Tuesday Afternoon Book Club is his novel “The Reckoning”.
In this novel, unlike anything he has written before, Grisham takes us on an incredible journey from the Jim Crow South to the jungles of the Phillipines during World War II; from an insane asylum filled with secrets to the Clanton, Mississippi courthouse where a defense attorney is desperately trying to save his client.
Pete Banning is a decorated war hero who was born and raised in Clanton, Mississippi. He is a cotton farmer, husband, father and member of the Methodist Church. Then on an October day he walks into the church and calmly shoots and kills his pastor and friend. The murder is a shock to the community and his family. His lawyer and friend tries to defend him but Pete’s response is “I have nothing to say”.
The book traces his war years, his wife’s illness, the reaction of his college age children, as well as the trial for his life. Book club members noted the suspenseful book kept you reading until the very last page.
The LeRoy Public Library has many books by John Grisham as well as other best selling authors. Make an appointment to stop by the library soon to find a great read.
