For fans of historical fiction, the Tuesday Afternoon Book Club”s April selection was a great example. “The Address” by Fiona Davis is a novel set in New York City beginning with the construction of the “Dakota”, a grand apartment, in 1884. The book them jumps forward 100 years later to 1985. The apartment building is still in New York City today.
A chance encounter with Theodore Camden, one of the architects of the Dakota, leads to a job offer for Sara Smythe and the opportunity to move to America. As managerette of the Dakota she is to oversee the opening the building as the wealthy families move in. She also has the opportunity to see more of Theo and his family as they move into the Dakota as well.
Fast forward 100 years to 1985, Bailey Camden, an interior designer is just out of rehab and in need of a job and place to live. Bailey’s grandfather was a ward of Theodore Camden but Bailey won’t inherit any of the massive Camden estate as she is not a blood relative. Bailey’s “cousin” Melinda offers to let Bailey oversee the renovation of her lavish Dakota apartment, giving her a place to live and a job. As
Bailey lives and works in the building she learns more of the Camden family and it’s previous employee Sara Smythe. A century apart, Sara and Bailey, are both tempted by and struggle against the issues of their respective time. The Dakota holds many secrets for both of the women which slowly are uncovered and changes everything they know about the Camden family and the Dakota. The Dakota is still a lavish building in New York City with apartments recently selling for several million dollars.
Book Club members will recommend this book or any others by author Fiona Davis. She is an excellent author of historical fiction. Her books are well researched and well written.
