Afternoon Book Club
This past summer Minnesota author, Allen Eskens, visited LeRoy. He shared his method
of writing with the audience. The Tuesday Afternoon Book Club has read several of his books
so selected another, “The Heavens May Fall”, as their August book. Eskens’ novels are set
in Minnesota, this one in the Twin Cities area. Detective Max Rupert and attorney Boady
Sanden’s friendship is being pushed to the breaking point. Max is convinced that Jennavieve
Pruitt was kidnapped by her husband Ben. Boady is equally convinced that Ben, his client, is
innocent. As the case unfolds, the two are forced to confront their own personal demons.
Max is struggling with the death of his wife four years earlier, and the Pruitt case brings up old
memories. Boady hasn’t been in a court room since the death of an innocent client several
years ago. Both Max and Boady are certain they know the truth of the case.
The book moves quickly and keeps the reader questioning the outcome. The surprising
ending catches everyone off guard. Book Club members expressed Eskens is one of their
favorite mystery writers. With a background as a criminal lawyer he has a special talent to
spin a great story.
The book is available at the LeRoy Public Library as are the other six books he has written.
Another book is set to come out later this year. Stop by the Library to check one out soon.
