Susan River’s first novel “The Second Mrs. Hockaday” uses unique letters and dairy enters to tell the the intriguing and unnerving story of Placidia, the second Mrs. Hockaday, and Major Hockaday. Placidia was married at sixteen, war bride, has to learn to farm three hundred acre farm, learn the hard truths of slavery, and maintain humanity in the harsh reality of war.
The reality of war is harsh, you do what you have to do to survive, morals and justice may not be considered. Being a woman and having “no rights” just complicates life.
Discussion was lively, letters for communications, society rules, who can you trust, could you take a life? Or love at first sight. We all agreed, no matter which war, it takes a toll on everyone, not just the soldiers.
