TUESDAY AFTERNOON BOOK CLUB
The Tuesday Afternoon Book Club read “On Hummingbird Wings” by Lauraine Snelling during May.
Gillian Ormsby, with a busy career in New York City, is called home by her sister, Allison, because their mother claims she is dying. In California Gillian finds her mother’s beloved garden wilted and brown, the blinds drawn, and Dorothy in bed, waiting to die. She focuses on quickly restoring Dorothy’s health and will to live so she can get back to her own life. However, surrounded by new friends, Gillian is unprepared for the warmth of the neighborhood and new friendships.
Lauraine Snelling, who has published 65 books, has the ability to weave a story you can’t put down. She has written historical fiction as well as contemporary novels. “On Hummingbird Wings” is on of the
Con+temporary works.
Summer will soon be here. Stop by the LeRoy Public Library to find a good book to enjoy in the warm weather.
**********************************************************************************LEROY PUBLIC LIBRARY AWARDED COMMUNITY
COLLABORATION GRANT
Art Trailer Will Travel Throughout Southeastern Minnesota
April 26, 2016 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
LeRoy, MN – LeRoy Public Library has been awarded a Legacy Community Collaboration grant from SELCO (Southeastern Libraries Cooperating) to expand the Traveling Art Trailer program. In 2015, the trailer brought artists and assistants to communities throughout Mower County. This grant will expand the program to areas outside of Mower County.
Library Director Rhonda Barnes says, “Last year’s traveling art trailer program “Art in the Park” was so successful that we decided to expand it throughout southeastern Minnesota. Art offers children a chance to experiment and create, and this program can expand people’s ideas of what a library is.”
The traveling art studio will be stationed at LeRoy once per week for 4 weeks, on Wednesdays with all supplies. A teaching artist, accompanied by a teaching assistant, would come each day of the week to the location of the art trailer to teach. Each day of that week will have a different teaching artist and medium so that the children may learn different art mediums throughout the summer. For more information, call Ms. Barnes at 507.324.5641 at 1-8PM M-TH & 9AP-1PM Saturdays.
Community partners for the project are the Austin Public Library, Grand Meadow Public Library, Brownsdale Library, Zumbrota Library, Lyle Public School Library, Wabasha County Library, Riverland Community College, Lake City Library, Austin Public Schools Reader Café and the Austin Area Art Commission.

TUESDAY AFTERNOON BOOK CLUB
The Tuesday Afternoon Book Club read an excellent historical fiction book this month. “My Name is Mary Sutter” by Robin Oliveira is set in the east at the beginning of the Civil War. Mary Sutter is a midwife in Albany, New York. She yearns to become a surgeon. Because she is a woman the Medial School will not admit her. She pleads with the local doctor to apprentice with him but he declines. Determined to overcome the prejudices against women in medicine – and eager to run away from recent heartbreak –
Mary travels to Washington, D.C. to help tend the many Civil War wounded.
Mary’s courage, will and stubbornness win her the admiration of doctors and nurses alike. With the shortage of medical care, medicine and hospitals, tending the Civil War injured and ill was a never ending difficult job. Mary works tirelessly to save lives and, in the process, learns much about medical care.
The excellent, well written book tells the heartbreak of the war. Mary’s unwavering determination and vulnerability will impact readers.
Stop by the LeRoy Library to find this book and many other good reads. Remember- with your library card you have free access to many books and videos- old and new.
Stop by to enjoy one soon.

LeRoy Evening Book Club
We read “The Hundred Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out The Window And Disappeared” by Jonas Jonasson and translated from Swedish by Rob Bradbury. Allan, a 100 year old man was to celebreate his 100th birthday in the Nursing Home’s dinig room but decided to run away. He had his pj’s and slippers on and some cash in his pocket and when time came to go to the dining room he climbed out the window and ended up in the bus station. He bought a ticket for as much money he had, stole a heavy suitcase from a gentleman and boarded the bus. From this point on he meets people who help him or who are trying to catch him. Having a suitcase with millions of dollars makes the trip exciting. During the story we learn of his past, working with nitoglycerin as a teenager to the atom bomb.
We caught ouselves laughing out loud . Book is filled with satire and “could you believe that.” We decided a 100 year old man deserved some adventure. The story ends with Allan being 104 and still living good, only wish that for all of us.
Need a good read stop buy the LeRoy Library and browse the shelves
******************************************************************************** TUESDAY AFTERNOON BOOK CLUB
The Tuesday Afternoon Book Club met at the LeRoy Public Library to discuss the March selection “Where the River Ends” by Charles Martin. Members agreed this was a beautiful love story but a very difficult book to read.
The book is set in southern Georgia. Doss Michaels, the son of a poor single mom is an asthmatic kid who can not do many activities other kids do. His mother introduces him to drawing and painting. As a young man and struggling artist he meets Abigail Grace Coleman, the daughter of a powerful South Carolina senator. They fall in love and, against her father’s wishes, marry. Ten years into their marriage Abigail is diagnosed with breast cancer. The book follows their journey through her illness. She lists ten things she wants to do before she dies and Doss does everything he can to fulfill her wishes. A special wish is to ”ride the river”. They embark on a 130 mile canoe trip down the St. Mary’s River. This gives the book it’s title ”Where the River Ends”. .
The book is a well written story of overwhelming love and devotion. Have a kleenex ready as you read.
Charles Martin has written several books which have been favorites of many. Check them out at the LeRoy Public Library.
